TCFBO #067: Embracing Uncertainty
The importance of surrender in creating the results you desire.
Read Time: 4 minutes
In the world we live in, uncertainty is the only certainty we have.
And as we create our business and life visions, understanding and embracing the unpredictability of the future is almost as important as the visions themselves.
You see, as humans we have a tendency to think we know what’s going to happen in the future, despite plenty of evidence to the contrary.
We assume our lives will carry on tomorrow just as they did today.
We tend not to notice (or we ignore) small changes that are happening over time until these small changes have accumulated to such a size that we finally notice them and cannot ignore them any longer.
This usually occurs at a point when the changes are having a significant and direct impact on our lives.
Of course, there is a degree of probability that some things will remain the same.
But there’s also an enormous range of possibilities that could occur that will result in things being different or not going according to plan.
For example, if we met at a business event and started having a conversation, you would expect the conversation would proceed within certain cultural and societal boundaries.
You wouldn’t expect us to suddenly run round in circles pretending to be aeroplanes and then continue talking with you as if nothing unusual had happened.
But it is physically possible for that to occur…it’s just not likely.
You see, we all like to think we know what’s going on.
We make assumptions about what’s going to happen.
We like to feel in control.
But in reality, nobody really knows what’s going to happen from one moment to the next and it’s an illusion to think that we do.
You don’t know that the sale you’re almost certain you’re going to close isn’t going to fall through.
You don’t know that the most reliable member of your team isn’t going to unexpectedly resign.
You don’t know that your business isn’t going to grow beyond your wildest dreams because of some chance encounter with someone currently unknown to you.
All have varying degrees of probability and yet there is the possibility, no matter how remote, that they could occur.
So, if you ever find yourself resisting taking action towards creating your vision, it could be that you’re simply craving the security of where you are now.
Or maybe you’re fearful of taking a leap into the unknown.
If that’s the case, just remind yourself that you are living in the unknown all the time.
Every single second of your existence is the unknown.
Things are going to happen that you didn’t expect.
Sometimes these things will seem beneficial.
Sometimes they won’t.
That’s simply down to how you perceive them.
The important thing is that you are surrendered to the fact that anything could happen.
And the more you surrender, the less likely you are to get thrown off track or give up when the unexpected occurs.
You’ll simply realise that it’s just part of the creation process.
So, even though you are focused on creating your business vision, it’s important to surrender to the fact that you may fail.
Or that an important relationship ends.
Or that you get knocked down by the proverbial bus before you complete your vision.
You can literally surrender to whatever you imagine may cause you pain if it were to happen.
You’re surrendering to the fact that there are things you have no control over.
You’re surrendering to a higher power, (whatever that means to you).
Because if you’re resisting failure, your underlying focus is on failure and you’re feeding your subconscious mind with failure.
And as a result, you’ll end up taking actions that lead to failure.
But by surrendering you’re removing the emotional attachment to your outcomes.
You’re surrendering to the fact that the unexpected may happen.
However, let’s be clear.
Surrendering is not about giving up on your vision.
You can just as easily surrender to creating something even greater than what you can currently imagine.
In essence, think of it like this:
“I accept what is, I surrender to what may be, and I work diligently on what I love.”
With that in mind, ask yourself:
“What am I currently wanting to happen in a particular way?”
Then go and surrender to it not happening like that, or maybe happening at all.
You may be surprised at just how freeing that detachment from the outcome is and how easily you end up creating results you love.
