TCFBO #041: How to Get More Feedback from Your Chicken

Busting the myth of effective multi-tasking.

Read Time: 3.5 minutes

When we first started out by ourselves in business, we were all over the place, constantly hopping between projects and ideas but never really seeing the results we wanted.

We’d often get sidetracked, we’d start multiple projects at once and, as a result, projects would drag on and were often dropped (or forgotten about).

Then one afternoon, we were sitting in the audience at a business conference about online marketing.

Several speakers had spoken about marketing tactics.

But this particular speaker did something different.

He spoke about how inefficient and ineffective it was to launch multiple products simultaneously.

And, as we listened, something clicked.

However, it took several years to break the habits we’d created until finally we got to the point where we were able to remain focused on one project at a time.

And this dramatically changed what we were able to accomplish, both in our business and personal lives.

Because although multi-tasking projects might seem like a good idea at first glance, more than likely it is slowing you down and negatively impacting your life and your business.

Here’s why.

Imagine you’ve got three projects you want to do.

Project Chicken.

Project Elephant.

Project Monkey.

Each project takes 30 days of work to complete.

Once a project is complete, you must leave it running in operational mode for a further 60 days before making any changes to it.

All things being equal, if you work on all three projects at once, over the course of 30 days, you only get to do 10 days of work on each of the three projects.

So by day 30, each project is only one third complete.

And by day 60, each project is only two thirds complete.

You have to wait until day 90 for all three projects to be completed.

But what happens if you tackle the projects sequentially?

Well, by the end of day 30, Project Chicken is complete.

By the end of day 60, Project Elephant is complete and Project Chicken has been running in operational mode for 30 days.

By the end of day 90, Project Monkey is complete, Project Elephant has been running in operational mode for 30 days, and Project Chicken has been running in operational mode for 60 days.

So at the end of 90 days, not only are all three projects complete, you also have 30 days of feedback for Project Elephant and 60 days of feedback for Project Chicken.

And now you’ve finished your three projects you’ve got time to start making improvements to Project Chicken based on the feedback you’ve got from running it in operational mode for 60 days.

But that’s not all.

How much more satisfying is it to complete the first project by day 30, compared to having to work 90 days before anything is finished?

How much will you learn during the first project that you can use to improve the second and third projects before you even start on them?

How much more efficient are you when you’re not jumping between projects, trying to remember where you left off?

How much more effective are you when you give one project your full attention rather than splitting it across multiple projects simultaneously?

How much less stressed are you and your team when you’re all focused on one thing and moving together in the same direction?

Now, does this mean that when there are natural pauses in your first project that you just sit around doing nothing?

Not at all…unless you want to, of course :-)

But if you don’t want to sit around, you can use those pauses to move a second project forward.

The key is to make sure that you come back to the first project as soon as that natural pause has ended, not just forget about it and carry on with the second project.

Because by adopting a sequential approach and focusing on one project at a time you’ll experience a multitude of benefits in addition to just the quicker completion of projects.

So give it a go.

We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
