TCFBO #040: Don't Eat That Frog!

How to overcome procrastination the easy way.

Read Time: Less than 1 minute

Ever heard the phrase “Eat that frog”?

It’s a saying that suggests if you eat a live frog first thing each morning, it’s probably going to be the worst thing you’ll do that day.

Which, in theory, means that the rest of the day will be easier and more enjoyable.

And in Brian Tracy’s book, “Eat That Frog”, a key premise is that you tackle your biggest, hardest and most important task first thing each morning and persist until the task is complete.

In other words, eat the biggest, ugliest looking frog first.

Now, we know that this is a powerful method for some people.

But many find this approach daunting and simply adds to their level of procrastination.

Firstly, the sheer size and ugliness of the 'frog' sitting on our plate can be extremely off putting.

And, secondly, if you’re a night owl like Paul, starting the day by tackling a mammoth task might not sync with your natural rhythm.

So, if you’re someone who tends to procrastinate on their most important or challenging tasks, instead of eating a big, ugly frog first thing in the morning, start off with something smaller and tastier.

Now, that doesn’t mean slacking off and spending the first two hours of your day doom scrolling through social media.

Just find two or three small tasks that you know you’re going to find easy and / or enjoyable.

Get them done and cross them off your action list.

A few minutes into your day and you’ve already completed two or more tasks.

And we all know how good it feels to cross something off the list!

So you also get sense of accomplishment and a confidence boost.

And because those small tasks are now off your mind, your mental clutter is reduced and you can give the more complex tasks the focus they require.

But it doesn’t stop there.

Because you’ve also created momentum.

And once you’re in motion, it’s easier to keep moving.

That big, ugly frog suddenly doesn't look so intimidating because you're already on a roll.

You’re warmed up and in the groove.

You’re getting things done!

Those first quick wins really can positively set the tone for the rest of your day.

So, before you try to swallow that frog in one gulp, consider warming up with a few appetisers.

And if it still looks too big, check out this method for breaking tasks down to a size you know with 100% certainty you can complete.

Let us know how you get on and we’ll see you next week.
